Saturday 05/19 - Rebecca Webb, Sutures opening @ JDC Fine Art

Sutures: Stories with Seams, by Rebecca Webb. Exhibition Dates: May 4 – June 30, 2012. Opening Reception with the Artist: Saturday, May 19, 5:00 – 7:30 pm. Sutures: Stories with Seams presents a body of fragments. The ongoing series by Rebecca Webb joins seemingly unrelated frames where personal and anonymous meet. Friends, family, and the self are the subject of one frame; the compliment is a forsaken place or abandoned scene. Tension emerges in our desire to unify the images. While for Webb the work is extremely personal it functions on many levels, as the specific becomes the general. The intensity of the personal narrative comes through in feelings of fear and joy; disappointment and hope; longing, desire, and attainment. We feel this work, it affects us in a strange and unsettling way - rather than turn from the scene we find ourselves longing to engage, to sew back together that which is torn. Rebecca Webb was a recent entrant to Pizza Parlay.

Thursday 05/31 - Heterotopia @ UCSD

The UCSD University Art Gallery and Visual Arts Department are pleased to announce Heterotopia, an exhibition featuring the work of this year's graduating MFA students. Conceived by Michel Foucault, "heterotopia" describes non-hegemonic conditions of human geography. Heterotopias consist of socially-elaborated counter-sites, or places where the real sites within and between cultures are simultaneously represented, contested, and upended. Consistent with Foucault's heterotopia, the conditions of a fine arts program are apt to be likewise non-hegemonic and discursive - a space of critical deliberation, evolution, and a plurality of ideas. We have expanded this notion to encompass the various trajectories and coexistent practices of this widely diverse graduating class.
